DESCRIPTION OF THE MALVASIA OF SCHIOPETTO
Malvasia di Schiopetto is one of the great wines of Collio. The variety of Malvasia grown in Friuli, also called Istrian, stands out within the large family of this ancient vine of Greek origin, for its rich and intense profile, but less aromatic and soft than the Malvasia di Candia grown in other regions . The bouquet expresses above all aromas of ripe yellow fruit and hints of local aromatic herbs. On the palate it is broad and enveloping, with a nice persistence and a fresh finish, which closes on savory and mineral notes typical of the Collio terroir.
Malvasia wine comes from the vineyards of the Capriva Cru, the original nucleus of the Schiopetto estate, which also manages vineyards in the precious areas of Zegla, Pradis and Oleis. The vine of ancient Greek origin has been present in Friuli for centuries and is now part of the historical varieties of the region. The splendid sunny exposures, protected by the Julian Alps from the cold north winds and mitigated by the gentle breezes of the nearby Adriatic Sea, proved to be perfect for slow ripening of the grapes with rich and intense aromas. The soils of Oecene origin, characterized by the presence of Flysh or “ponca” in Friulian, deriving from sedimentation of sandstone and limestone on ancient sea beds, are draining and rich in minerals. The manual harvest usually takes place in the first weeks of September. The grapes are pressed in a very soft way and the must is fermented in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 16 ° C, which lasts about 10-12 days. The wine ends its journey by refining on the lees for about 8 months in steel and finishing with 5 months in the bottle.
The white Malvasia represents a piece of history of Friulian viticulture. The ancient Greek grape, which takes its name from the port of the Peloponnese Monemvasia, found in the sunny exposures and poor soils of the Collio, the ideal conditions to produce intense whites with a Mediterranean profile. The wine has a bright and brilliant golden yellow color. The aromas recall floral hints, aromas of ripe yellow fruit, hints of spontaneous herbs from the Mediterranean scrub and iodized sensations. On the palate it has a good structure, it is warm, with rich and juicy fruit, well balanced by freshness and a decidedly saline finish.
