CONTRADA PORCARIA

Passopisciaro produces six different bottlings of nerello mascalese, the native grape to Mt. Etna, in order to showcase the profound differences in the terroir – lava flow, aspect, and altitude – of the various Contrade that we work with. The vines are all between 70-100 years old, and the nerello harvest typically occurs at the end of October/early November. The wines undergo fermentation in steel vats, followed by malolactic and 18 months aging in large neutral oak barrels; this minimal intervention approach to winemaking allows the differences in terroir to shine.

Contrada Porcaria (Contrada P) is a large old domain at 650 m (2,100 ft) a.s.l. and is considered Mount Etna’s famous and sought-after contrade because of the lush, robust wines it produces. The soil is made of a frail sheet of lava that splinters under one’s feet. We make wine from 1.5 hectares that we own within this cru.

CONTRADA PORCARIA 2014

Throughout Europe, the short length of the harvest alone shows us that the 2014 vintage on Etna is an exceptional one. By October 20th, the grapes were already ripe up to the highest Contrada, and the harvest took off in just a few days everywhere on the mountain. Emerging from a sort of hibernation in the cooler 2013 vintage, they had a forceful, energetic disposition the following year. Looking back across the 2014 vintage, one can see now the great success in the way in which the days and nights of the year provided perfect conditions for the vines.

There is this languid quality in the wines of 2014. In them, there is a massive quality, full-bodied with powerful aromas that hover just above the surface of the wine, instead of leaping out of the glass. Nerello mascalese darkens only slightly, and every year the shade is different. This year, the fermentation caused the dark grapes to slowly yield their special garnet color, while the yeasts were moving through the massive musts. After running the wine into the large barrels and cement vats, it will need months to become recognizable because the slow progression of the wine in the winery corresponds perfectly to the slow progression of the vines in the vineyards throughout the year. It’s apparent that the wine is dense, yet soft; it has the aroma of sandalwood, and each month it shows the same grand, free quality, which seems to defy the laws of gravity. The perfume of sandalwood in the 2014 vintage softens the more typical aromas of citrus fruits and camphor, typical of the lavas of Etna. It is in the mélange of these aromas in which the great luxury of this vintage is found.

Etna Wines: The Uniqueness of the Volcanic Soil between Eruptions and Fascinating Wines
Over the last few days, the spectacular images of the eruption of Mount Etna, a Sicilian volcano that not infrequently shows clearly visible effusive eruptive activity, have gone around the world. In such an apparently hostile environment, wines of absolute value are born, whose uniqueness and peculiarities derive precisely from morphological and climatic conditions that are unique in the world. In fact, volcanic ash contains very high concentrations of minerals and, when mixed with the soil, nutrients such as phosphates, nitrates, potassium and calcium, which are necessary for the healthy growth of the plants.  Naturally, the work in the vineyard, given the unevenness of the soil and the low yield, is demanding, but gives rise to results of absolute and unique quality, not forgetting the great temperature range, which can reach 25/30 degrees between day and night.   In addition, the different slopes on which the 133 districts are located give different productions due to their exposures and soils characterised by different flows over time.                                      For the whites, Carricante is the grape variety that dominates (in Etna DOC 60% minimum, in Etna DOC Superiore 80%), which arrived in Sicily at the time of the ancient Greeks. This variety gives its best in these volcanic soils, even at heights where other vines cannot reach, directly acquiring its distinct minerality, which goes hand in hand with the vine's own acidity and sapidity, thus giving rise to long, deep, long-lived and elegant whites.   Moving on to the reds, the most important grape variety is certainly Nerello Mascalese, with its thick, late-ripening berries. To the eye the colour is a tendentially light ruby red with garnet notes, high acidity, marked fruity scents in the first years that gradually integrate and leave room for minerality and spices, with results of rare power and fineness of taste and smell.
