Valtellina Superiore DOCG
The grapes come from vineyards located in Località Fracia
in the DOCG Valgella (from the Latin vallicula and
vallicella) sub-area, in the municipality of Teglio, situated on
terraces supported by dry stone walls on the steep slopes of
the Rhaetian Alps, along the right bank of the River Adda.
Grapes: 95% Chiavennasca (the local name for Nebbiolo) and 5% Pignola.
Vineyards: The grapes come from vineyards in the Valtellina Superiore Vagella area (Località
Fracia). Parcels of vines, at an altitude varying between 350 and 500 metres are
trained using the arched variant of the Guyot system, on shallow and loose loamysandy
soils, with south facing exposure. The grape yield is 80 quintals per hectare.
Vinification: ripe grapes, picked in mid-October, are traditionally vinified by the red wine method,
with 10 days of maceration using a spraying system (automatic pumping over 5-6
times a day) of the skins. Fermentation takes place at a temperature of 25-28°C.
Ageing: the new wine remains in steel tanks for 2 months, followed by 18 months in Slavonian oak
barrels with a capacity of 80hl. Then it is refined in the bottle for an appropriate
period before being sold on the market.
The wine: bright garnet red in colour; an intense bouquet with hints of dried flowers (violets
and dog rose) and spices, with notes of blackberry jam; a dry, warm and tangy
flavour, with elegant sensations of plums and bitter almonds that pleasantly linger.
Analytical details: Alc. /Vol. 13.40%; total acidity 5.10 g/l; pH 3.62; residual sugars 1.0 g/l; dry
extract 26.5 g/l.
Optimum storage: 5-6 years in bottles stored horizontally in a cool, dark place.
Food pairing: fine poultry, lamb, kid goat, grilled meat and mature cheeses
Serving temperature: 18-20°C.
